The Filipino Island of Bohol is best known for two things: tarsiers and what I came to think of as an exaggerated teletubby land known as The Chocolate Hills, a strange landscape of 1,268 eerie and bizarre conical mounds dotted a round the centre of the island…
So-called because during the dry season the grass on the hillsides dries up and the 40-120-meter cones turn brown to become reminiscent of a scattering of Hershey’s Kisses as far as the eye can see…

The Chocolate Hills are in the middle of the island of Bohol and are easy to visit on a day trip by car, minivan or by moto (which would be a great deal more fun!)
You can visit the hills in conjunction with a trip to the Tarsier sanctuary, butterfly garden and other attractions on the island and you’ll be able to stop for lunch on a Loboc River Cruise, and drive through the man-made forest on your way through.

Lucky you, that will give you a great reason to explore The Philippines! On Bohol this and the Tarsier sanctuary are the big attractions, and there is plenty to do on the neighbouring islands. I hope the rest of my Philippines posts will be helpful for you!

Hi Elle, I know I must admit that until I began researching my trip to The Philippines I had not heard of the place either, and when I did hear of the chocolate hills I thought it would be just another nicely-named area that didn’t actually live up to the name. Now for the little matter of getting back there in the dry season to photograph them when they look like actual chocolate!
