I say The Cosmo is the perfect place to stay in Hong Kong but frankly my dears I’ve never actually stayed anywhere else.

Once I found The Cosmo with its boutique concept, ice-cream sundae colour-pop rooms, super-efficient shuttle service about town, and 24 hour check-in policy I simply never bothered to look elsewhere.

*Update 2017: The Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong has now become part of the well-respected Dorsett Hotel Group and is now refurbished and called The Dorsett Wanchai.

So on my most recent trip to the Pearl of the Orient I decided to stay at The Cosmo’s big sister property – The Cosmopolitan – a few doors down from its cool young ingénue of a sibling, and check out the rather more refined, upmarket and business-like atmosphere there.

The Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong and The Cosmopolitan Hong Kong are both well-located close to Happy Valley Race Course, a few minutes from Times Square, in Hong Kong’s shopping hub of Causeway Bay. The Cosmopolitan itself actually overlooks the course and on Wednesday evenings you can watch the horse racing from your huge picture windows.

Of course 7 nights a week you can simply sit and watch the spectacle of the Hong Kong Skyline laid out before you; this is a textbook Hong Kong view, and one you’ll never tire of throwing open your curtains to in the morning.

Both hotels’ mission is to concentrate on the core building blocks of guests basic needs, and it does show. They have correctly identified the fact that what you really want from a hotel room is a comfortable bed, good quality soft bed linen and pillows plus easy access to refreshments like tea coffee and water, and if you have these it makes a world of difference to your stay.

Both Cosmo and Cosmopolitan have identical high quality mattresses and super soft linen in every room so you almost certainly will get a fantastic night’s sleep -and you’ll need it to keep up with the pace in HK.

Instead of trying to charge you for water, rooms have a complimentary water bar with 4 different types of mineral water which are replenished every day. If you book direct with the hotel (but not through an agent) you’ll enjoy the 24 hour check in/ check out policy which allows you to keep your room for 24 hours from check in, rather than imposing a noon check-out time on you whatever time you turned up. For those on late flights this is a major advantage, and well-worth looking into – I can’t understand why more hotels don’t follow suit.

High Points

The bed is properly comfy, the duvet is luxurious and there are 11 different types of pillow on offer from jasmine and lavender scented to non-allergic and even pillows made of stones (I wish I’d given that a try). The standard in-room amenities such as fruit, tea, coffee, water bar, hairdryer, toiletries are useful and plentiful.

The Cosmo’s ‘Breeze’ outdoor garden area has free wifi, tea, coffee and fruit is a welcome addition and a great place to chill out – or if you’re a smoker, light up – this is one of the few places where you can smoke freely.

Location is very convenient, and most taxi drivers know the hotel but being opposite such a well-known landmark you can’t possibly go wrong with directions which is reassuring.

The Cosmopolitan also has some crazy suites kitted out with all kinds of gadgets, like the Sony Suite where you can kick back after a day in Hong Kong with the latest 3D TV with all the bells and whistles, or the OSIM massage suite which has a selection of different massage machines for your to try out to soothe your aching muscles post-shopping.

Low Points

The same wifi that works in the lobby isn’t available in the room so depending on your room tariff you may have to purchase a package and reconnect when you reach your room which is an unwelcome hassle. If your room rate excludes breakfast you might find the buffet a little pricey, but you can always jump on the free shuttle bus to Times Square for a Starbucks fix instead.
