I love Cambodia, I love Siem Reap and I love Angkor Wat. But as well as playing the same game as everyone else and trying to get pictures of the famous temples sans tourists, I decided to embrace the scenes created by my armies of fellow snappers. Here are my top 5 photos of random tourists at Angkor Wat…

We all want to get arty shots of tourist attractions as if we were the only people there, but the real story at Angkor Wat, complete with bus loads of people from all over the world marvelling at the beauty of the temples, is worth capturing too.

One more tourist poses at Angkor Wat. Oh wait, that’s me.

With over a million tourists at Angkor Wat every year it’s hard to avoid others, but getting there early certainly helps. Also ask your guide to try to take you to some of the furthest temples early in the day before the big 9 am tour groups arrive.

You can reach the temples at Angkor Wat in a tuktuk, on a bicycle or in a minivan from the nearby town of Siem Reap. You can buy a ticket from the booth on the way into the temple complex, which will include your photo to prevent you from selling the ticket on.

A single day pass costs $20, a three-day pass costs $40  – and you no longer have to visit on consecutive days which is a big relief. Opening hours are 5:00 am – 6:00 pm for Angkor Wat, though Bantrey Srey closes at 5:00 pm and Kbal Spean at 3:00 pm.

Interesting idea for a post! 🙂 Nice shots, especially the 4th one with all the people in it.

Thanks – Yeah I love that photo too, with all the colours people are wearing, then those two little girls running by 🙂

I love the reflection shot. I try to get pictures of the tourists too – rather than going to painstaking efforts to make sure noone ‘ruins’ the picture. It’s a more accurate representation of a place, and it often makes things more interesting too 🙂

Yeah I agree, and I love reflection shots, wish I was a good enough photographer to capture more subtly ones too.
