Rotterdam

In which I use my favourite arty little Instagrams as a guide to the lesser-known unsung Dutch ‘Dam – I’m talking of course about the port city of Rotterdam. Here are 5 Things to do in Rotterdam…

Eat Burgers at Hamburg

Hamburg In Rotterdam

Hamburg In Rotterdam

This may be Rotterdam indeed, but take a detour to Hamburg for great burgers (so they should be with the promising slogan ‘proper burgers’) and sides with very friendly and cool service (not a given in Rotterdam by any means) in the middle of the most happening  part of town  -Witte de Withstraat. Good tofu and pumpkin options for veggies too.

Hamburg is at Witte de 94B, 3012 BT Rotterdam

Call – 010 737 1537

Opening hours: Monday / Wednesday 16:00 to 23:00 Thursday / Sunday 12:00 to 23:00

Take In Damn Fine Views at Euromast

Euromast

Euromast

Look at the view or if you dare or launch yourself into it at Euromast.

Ascend to the viewing platform of Rotterdam’s tallest building at 185 metres for views of  the entire city – plus there’s also a deli and gift shop.  If you’re feeling extra brave try abseiling from the roof of the glass restaurant, which is available every weekend from May to September costing €49.50.

Euromast is at Parkhaven, 3016, GM Rotterdam

Call 010-436 48 11

Opening hours: Daily April to September: 9.30 to 23.00, October to March: 10.00 to 23.00. Entrance to the viewing platform costs €17

Stay At A High End Hotel Called ‘Heaven’

Euromast Hotel

Euromast’s Heaven-sent Hotel

If you don’t tire of the view from the Euromast during daylight hours you can always return to enjoy a unique viewing of the city of Rotterdam laid out before you from your own private ‘terrace’ – the entire viewing platform becomes your own private playground if you rent the ‘Heaven’ room at the top of the tower.

The big comfy bed with crisp white linen, palatial walk-in shower, music piped in from hidden speakers in the ceiling, this place has got it all including an incredible breakfast delivered to your room on an enormous trolley heaving with pancakes and croissants, but nothing, and I mean nothing, can beat the view.

Contact details as above. A night in Heaven costs €385.00.

Grab A Cheerful Stay at StayOkay Hostel

Stayokay Rotterdam

Stayokay Rotterdam

If you’re looking for a great value place to stay in Rotterdam that’s spotlessly clean, highly functional and has a retro styled twist, StayOkay is ideal for you. Located at Blaak station on Overblaak a Barbican-like late 1970’s development of architecturally unique cube houses, the company converted the larger properties in 2009.

Th real surprise here is the food, breakfast is a healthy and appetizing selection of bread, cheese, meats with jams, tea and coffee plus juice and fresh fruit (and those funny sugar sprinkles Dutch people seem to eat for breakfast) and dinners looked healthy and tasty.

Visit the StayOkay website for more details and pricing

Oh, and a 6 Second Vine-like Video Clip may not be Instagram but it counts, right?
