Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Mexico’s Riviera Maya isn’t short on publicity for its vacation charms, and the entire Yucatan Peninsula isn’t exactly bereft of 5 Star hotel options.

So chances are if you’re headed to this area of Mexico you already know exactly what you want, and that’s likely to be a luxurious haven of relaxation encompassing the holy holiday trinity of sun, sea and sand. With a bit of spa thrown in for extra serenity.

The hard part is choosing which of the many possible beachside palaces in which to set up your private kingdom and feel like royalty for a few blissful days and nights.

I chose the Banyan Tree at Mayakoba, and it certainly conquered my heart and ensured I was laying down my arms within minutes of arrival…

Falling in love with hotels for Valentine’s Day…

A romantic weekend away for Valentine’s Day – sounds like a great idea in principle, right?

But as anyone who has tried to book even a simple night away with their partner already knows, the process of finding the perfect hotel for romance isn’t all hearts and flowers.

You’re searching for seclusion and sophistication in a Valentine hotel, but you also need that unquantifiable quality – sex appeal. And just like dating itself, there’s always the worry that hotels which look good on paper could turn out to be a let down when we meet them in person.

So I thought I’d compile a list of  the 6 sexiest places in the entire world I’ve ever stayed. These are tried and tested hotels that I would not hesitate in recommending for romance, so you can kick the research to the kerb…

Brussels at Christmas

Brussels at Christmas

At the start of winter I usually struggle with the idea of weekends away to colder European countries – ever clinging onto that last bit of winter sun.

But that all changes come Christmas when I’m a sucker for short breaks to snowy cities and can’t wait to hit the European Christmas markets to stock up on stockings, buy more bobbly hats and glug down some Glühwein.

Here are my recommendations for the best Christmas markets in Europe

A Hip Weekend In Houston – 48 Hours In H-Town

weekend in Houston

The We Love Houston Sign

I begin my weekend in Houston like any average tourist, knowing this city has been singled-out by its history of space exploration, is the very definition of a sprawling US metropolis, and that it’s famous for oil and gas.

Fast forward 48 hours and I’m wearing my H-Town T-shirt with pride, clutching a NASA fridge magnet and nursing a hangover which underlines what I was told last night – with a new influx of young professionals Houston’s reputation for energy now has a double meaning.

In short I’ve learned that Houston is now hip

The Best of Brazil’s Big Cities: In Search of Slick São Paulo

São Paulo

São Paulo Skyline

We Brits do love an underdog – and as an urban-travel-obsessed English person there’s nothing I like more than an underrated destination – or what I term an ‘underdog city’.

Yes show me a metropolis that tourists tend to to stay away from and I’ll find a way to love it – so when I visited Brazil, it wasn’t just Rio I was ready for, I made sure my time in South America included the swanky, sprawling skyscraper city of São Paulo

The Perfect Place To Stay In Sedona: The Amara Resort & Spa

The Amara Resort & Spa, Sedona, Arizona

It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, right? Well sometimes, wrong.

When the destination is Arizona’s famed scenic and sacred red rock panorama, specifically the high class hippy hiking mecca of artsy Sedona, and that final section of your journey is a spine-tingling first glimpse of looming rocks under the cloak of darkness, then the journey is forgotten and it’s very much about the out-of-this-world place at which you’ve now arrived.

Rio Perdido – literally meaning lost river – is one of those paradise hotels that you can’t quite believe exists this far off the beaten path; you wonder how anyone first discovers it while being simultaneously glad you did – and hopeful that not too many other people have been let in on the secret…

Blue Osa

The pool and spa area at Blue Osa

If there’s one thing I always thought sounded like a great thing to do one day, you know, in the future, it was a yoga retreat. But now that I’ve tried a week-long beach side yoga retreat on Costa Rica’s unspoiled Osa Peninsula, all I can say is don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today…
